Leader donates 20 bn rials for release of indigent inmates
The leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Khamenei donated 20 billion rials to the Diya (Blood Money) organization to secure the freedom of prisoners who could not afford to pay their debts.
The donation is made every year during the holy month of Ramadan in a ceremony held by the Iranian Blood Money (Diya) Organization which is dubbed Golrizen (Distributing bunches of flowers). It is a nationwide event attended by people who would like to provide diya or blood money to help needy inmates.
In Islamic Sharia law, Diyya is the financial compensation paid to the victim or heirs of a victim in the cases of murder, bodily harm, or property damage. It is an alternative punishment to Qisas (equal retaliation).
