1804 Metric Tonnes of Garlic Yielded in Kulgam This Season: District Agriculture Officer

Srinagar 08 June :- Around 1804 metric tonnes of garlic production have been yielded in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district this season after 164 hectares of the area being used for the cultivation of the spice, said Agriculture Officer Kulgam Malik Riaz.

The Agriculture Officer Kulgam said that 164 hectares of land were under the garlic during the period 2023-24 in Kulgam and 1804 metric tonnes have been yielded, benefiting the people with Rs. 7.22 crore.

As per the data shared by the officer, garlic production in 2023-24 has surpassed the previous two years’ yield as 1142 metric tonnes and 1441 metric tonnes of garlic were produced in 2021-22 and 2022-23, respectively.

However, the land used for the production of garlic was comparatively lower during 2021-22 and 2022-23 than in 2023-24, Agriculture Officer Kulgam said.

Riaz further added that under the Government of India’s One District One Product (ODOP) initiative, Kulgam was selected as the “Garlic District” owing to the exceptional quality of its garlic.

Riaz said that the country has been using various technologies to increase the garlic output. “In future, we will get ahead of China, which is the largest producer of garlic in the world followed by our country,” he added.
