Leader pardons, commutes sentences for 2,654 Iranian inmates

IRAN – Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Leader of Islamic Revolution, has approved to pardon or commute sentences for 2,654 prisoners.

This decision, made on the occasion of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Ghadir, follows a proposal from Gholmhossein Mohseni-Ejei, the Chief of the Iranian Judiciary.

Sadeq Rahimi, the deputy head of the Judiciary, detailed the pardon and sentence reduction, specifying that out of the 2,654 eligible individuals, 2,547 were from public and revolutionary courts, 55 from the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces, and 52 from the Discretionary Punishments Organization of Iran.

Among those pardoned, Rahimi highlighted that 182 were women, 30 were foreign nationals, 53 had been convicted on security charges, and 6 were under 18 years old.

This initiative is carried out under Article 110 (11) of the Iranian Constitution, granting the Supreme Leader authority to pardon or commute sentences upon recommendation from the Judiciary chief.
