The solemn commemoration of Arbaeen, a significant event in the Islamic calendar, has once again drawn millions of pilgrims to Karbala, Iraq. The event, observed 40 days after the Day of Ashura, marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain a.s, the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w., who sacrificed his life in the historic Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
Arbaeen, meaning “forty” in Arabic, signifies the completion of the traditional mourning period for Imam Hussain a.s. This annual pilgrimage is one of the largest religious gatherings globally, where millions of devotees undertake the arduous journey on foot from Najaf, the holy shrine of Imam Ali a.s, to Karbala. The pilgrimage transcends borders, with people from all walks of life uniting in a powerful display of devotion and solidarity.
Throughout this period, the pilgrims engage in various acts of worship, including prayers, recitations of elegiac poetry (Marsiya), and participating in processions. The journey is a testament to the enduring legacy of Imam Hussain a.s, whose stand against tyranny and fight for justice continues to inspire millions around the world.
