Nagaland Elects Congress MP for First Time in 25 Years; Beats Opposition less Ruling Alliance

Indian National Congress candidate S. Supongmeren Jamir won the lone Nagaland Lok Sabha seat, defeating rival Dr. Chumben Murry of Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), a BJP ally. Nagaland has chosen Congress MP after 25 years since 1999. K. Asungba Sangtam was the last Lok Sabha MP from Congress.

Nagaland’s single Lok Sabha seat has three contestants – Chumben Murry of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, Hayithung Tungoe Lotha as an Independent candidate, and S. Supongmeren Jamir of the Congress.

Polling in Nagaland took place in the first phase of the Lok Sabha election on April 19. The total voter turnout from the total 13,17,036 electors in the State was 57.72%.CNI
